Metabolic Cost Walking

8. Metabolic Cost: Walking versus Nordic Pole Walking

Using your nordixx-poles will increase your oxygen consumption which in turn brings more oxygen into your blood, increases your caloric expenditure on average by 25 – 30 percent.

If you pole walk brisk, you can increase your caloric expenditure by up to 46 percent.

The world renown Cooper Institute, in Dallas, Texas found that walking with Nordic Poles burns on average 20-30 percent more calories than regular walking. Walking at a brisk pace with Nordic poles, you burn up to 46 % more calories.

-Cooper Institute, Texas, USA studied the metabolic cost of NW compared to normal walking in 22 31-year-old men and women (Morss et al. 2001, Church et al.2002).

-Participants of this study did walk on an outdoor 200-m track with Cosmed K4b for oxygen consumption and Polar Vantage heart rate monitor for HR measurements.

-Study indicated significant increases of oxygen consumption (20% on average), caloric expenditure and HR in NW compared to normal walking. The range of increase was large, i.e. in oxygen consumption 5-63% indicating differences in poling intensity and technique.
